BANDAI NAMCO Total Loss Over 30 Billion Yen, Due to Game Department
BANDAI NAMCO Holdings Inc. is doing badly. It announced a downward revision at the Financial Report for the Third Quarter of the Fiscal Year Ending March 2010.
The operating income was expected to be 14 billion yen, now the figure become 0.1 billion yen. With the restructing cost, there will be a total loss of 31 billion yen.
As for particular department, Game Contents made a loss of 5 billion yen, Visual and Music Content made a loss of 1 billion yen, Amusement Facility made a loss of 0.5 billion yen. The only department making profit and has revealed the data is Toys and Hobby, a profit of 1 billion yen.
As a result, Game department will cut 200 jobs. That is 10% of the total 1927 staff of BANDAI NAMCO Games. The whole BN Group will cut 10% too.
Why is it worsening so suddenly?
Some problems should blame itself, but there are reasons that it could do nothing. Especially for anime and visual or amusement facility, the whole industry is worsening and many companies make loss. BANDAI NAMCO quite counting on that 2 fields, that's why they need to restructure and revise the account, and give a total loss of 31 billion yen.
If all problem had came out this time, next year it should make a surplus.
Hard to say. Visual industry rotates in a 2-year basis. A change can't show any effect immediately. Of course it was Lehman Shock 2 years ago, the group shouldn't have injected too much money into the business. As for amusement, only cutting facilities can't change the overall downward trend. If there is no influenza, it should make a surplus, but really counting on new games.
No good game no customer huh.
But there is a new move in the next term. They will establish a Live Entertainment department. Details are as follow.

"With the aim of maximizing the value of Group content, NAMCO BANDAI Live Co., Ltd. (provisional name) will be founded as a new company on April 1, 2010."(from BANDAI NAMCO Press Release)

That is just the trend of the era. It is hard to sell CD now, so they target core users by live and event to secure the income. I doubt how good can be the profit, but they should try their best.
Game and anime departments, i.e. BANDAI NAMCO Games and BANDAI Visual will combine. BANDAI NAMCO Games will be the centre of their content business.
I doubt the effect of such action. Chaos may be the only result. If the staff are talented, it could be another story, but I can't find such talent from their past performance
Oh...
It is interesting that BNGI's Shin Unozawa will lead the anime department again. Hope he can do somthing charming. Anyway, hope we would only hear BANDAI NAMCO's name in good news of content industry.
Maybe they will recover greatly.
Really hope so...
