Super Robot Wars' Business Model on PS3
| Super Robot Wars' Business Model on PS3 | |
![]() |
When "Super Robot Wars" series go to PS3, they need a new business model in order to get profit. I want to suggest some personal idea. |
![]() |
"Another Century's Episode R" had just been announced a few days ago, a PS3 "Super Robot Wars" is quite possible now. |
![]() |
What is your suggestion? |
![]() |
Basically they should adopt the model of PS3's "Yakuza (Ryu ga Gotoku)": build up the "inside" such as system at the 1st entry of the series, then change the "outside" in sequel. In SRW's case, "inside" means the battle calculation, mapping, program of menu etc. Story and battle animation are "outside". They should not care even if the 1st entry has a deficit. |
![]() |
Deficit is bad... |
![]() |
Just if you look at the 1st entry only. Think about a series with 3 entries, the real problem is to earn an overall profit at the end of 3rd entry. If they use "Yakuza (Ryu ga Gotoku)" model, they can make 1 SRW every year, and it will be profitable in a short period. 1st entry's deficit is not a problem. |
![]() |
Pace is the point. |
![]() |
SRW's popularity is constant, won't face a sudden downturn. So they need to plan the overall system and program that can be used in 3 entries when they start making the 1st. That can reduce the development cost. Also, release some FAN DISC can guarantee profit. |
![]() |
For users, a new SRW every year is good news. |
![]() |
Secondly, when making the 2nd or 3rd entry, they should not version up the battle animation of those robots appeared before. |
![]() |
No version up!? |
![]() |
No. If you change the graphics everytime on PS3, that would cost huge effort, time and money. Version up the same robot would just affect the profit. They should make a wise decision, not to version up the same robot everytime. Of course I'm talking about a series. If the series will finish in 3 years, they should not change graphics within the series. |
![]() |
Users may complain huh. |
![]() |
That's better than wasting time in previous robot and can't spend money on new stuff, resulting a bad sequel. They should spend effort in new robots' graphics. |
![]() |
Huh. |
![]() |
Then we should talk about the main point today: download content. |
![]() |
Bandai Namco Games is proud of that. |
![]() |
Firstly, they should provide download content for us to download characters from the 1st entry to use in the 2nd entry. |
![]() |
To use in the 2nd entry!? |
![]() |
Download characters don't need to involve in the story. There may be anime not included in a certain sequel, and the robots from that should be available for download. |
![]() |
Won't the story be strange? |
![]() |
Take "Another Century's Episode 3" as an example. You can purchase extra robots within the game, but they never related to the story. However, we gamers are glad to pilot more robots, and there is no problem even if the robot is not related to the story. Of course some people would like the robot to be involved in story, but that may ruin the storyline. Therefore, PS3's SRW should adopt the style of "Another Century's Episode 3". |
![]() |
"Another Century's Episode 3" can purchase extra robots inside the game, but PS3's SRW should be sold as download content. |
![]() |
Yep. When the 2nd entry is launched, they should provide the old robots from the 1st entry for download. Don't need to change the graphic and data, just let us use them. Such system needs a good program to be built at the 1st entry. Download robots separately according to each featured anime, and give some benefit to the author. Then the licensing company would support SRW even the benefit is little. |
![]() |
And they should provide 1st and 2nd entries' robots for download in the 3rd entry. |
![]() |
Yep. And vice versa. |
![]() |
Vice versa!? |
![]() |
When the 2nd entry is launched, they should provide the new robots for download in the 1st entry. |
![]() |
Backward compatibility!? |
![]() |
Interesting isn't it? And that can create new needs for the 1st entry, and they can release a "THE BEST" version. Even though some people buy a second-hand 1st entry, the download content is profitable. Such backward compatibility needs a unified system throughout the series, that's why they need the same "inside". |
![]() |
I see. |
![]() |
Such action needs to coordinate with related licensing companies. They should feature more anime of their own group, in case some licensing companies refuse the download content, the variation can still be wide. Also, they can just give all benefit to licensing companies, consider the download service to be a good promotion of SRW itself. |
![]() |
Bandai Namco have many anime featured, that is not problematic. |
![]() |
If they feature Dunbine and L-Gaim at the 1st entry, old fans would just keep on download them at the 2nd and 3rd entries. |
![]() |
...... |
![]() |
There are some cautions when doing such download content. |
![]() |
And they are? |
![]() |
Firstly, don't make any event which must use downloaded robot to invoke. Also, don't make any special character for download only. If they do that, users may really complain, not only to SRW but the whole company. The service should only be an extra value to play characters appeared in other entries, and not greedily hunting profit. Just let the users freely buy the content they like. |
![]() |
Bandai Namco Games' download content has invoked many argument, they should pay attention. |
![]() |
Also, they can provide "capital (in-game money)" for download in the second round of the game. They can learn a lesson from "Tales of Vesperia". As long as it is limited in the second round of the game, and not ruining the game balance, selling capital is acceptable. |
![]() |
Bandai Namco Games has lots of such business data, I hope they can do better this time. |
![]() |
Lastly, the most important problem of PS3: HD graphics. They really need to abandon some dot graphics, and change to Anime. The series is used to the old-fashioned dot graphics, but it's hard to continue in the future. Recently, the BANDAI NAMCO Group has been restructured, it is easier now to cooperate with its anime section. They should ask the animator to draw the pilot facial graphics and some REAL-style battle animation. For example, GUNDAM's animation should be drawn by Sunrise itself. That can be a new selling point other then dot graphics. |
![]() |
Official animation huh. |
![]() |
And they can provide original theme song for download, to replace the battle BGM. That can be HOT. |
![]() |
If that so, they better include the song in the game from the beginning. |
![]() |
If that so, the selling price will be very high, and sales will be affected. Songs need money, they can only sell them as download content. The first game using such system will be "Another Century's Episode R". |
![]() |
Where did you find such information... |
![]() |
It's written in the SRW Blog. |
![]() |
Here is the extract. "I've written that some vocal song will be included...... I should say, the songs pre-installed in ACE R are Macross F's songs by Ranka and Sheryl. The tracklist is limited, so that we can afford to use the whole song in full size, not one section only." (from Super Robot Wars' Official Blog) |
![]() |
He said "pre-installed", that means there will be songs you can obtain after launching, and that should be download content. I don't know if that would charge us money or would be provide as a special download code for pre-order gift. Anyway there must be some arrangement. I think they have already adopt some idea I said here in "Another Century's Episode R", because some of them are developed from "Another Century's Episode 3". |
![]() |
Anyway, we're looking forward to PS3's "Super Robot Wars" series. |
![]() |
If they can't earn a probit they can't make a game. Some idea maybe disliked by users, but they should try it out and provide new games to us with the profit. |
