What is Success for Nintendo 3DS?
Tomorrow, Feb 26 is the launching day of newest portable console Nintendo 3DS.
In Japan, the pre-order at network shop had been full immediately after the start of pre-order. It is HOT before launch. Let see the situation in front of the game shops tomorrow.
Today is the launching eve, I would like to discuss the meaning of success for 3DS.
We had talked about 3DS at "Nintendo 3DS' Accent is not 3D".
We had mentioned that SUCCESS means to make profit. That's true. But it may not be the definition of success for 3DS.
You are rebuking your own words...
Making profit is the success of Nintendo, as a company. That's not the success of Nintendo 3DS itself.
So what is 3DS' success?
To increase the gaming population. This is always the aim of Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, and 3DS inherit this ideal. This means it has to maintain the new gamers explored by Nintendo DS and Wii, and also exploring more new comers.
I understand the wish to explore new users, but DS had been very popular, is that possible for them to find any more new gamer?
NDS had became popular partially due to illegal free software,so 3DS is difficult to sell as much as DS did. But not impossible, only slower than DS.
So it is hard to be successful huh?
Console sales is not necessary equal to exploring new users.
Why...
The goal is to increase gaming population, and that include those who watch others playing, and borrow to try it out. These are new users. As for how to make them buy one for themselves, that is the problem of success for Nintendo, as a company.
Nikkei Business had interviewed CEO Satoru Iwata on this issue, and here is his answer.

"But the goal is very clear. To make the number of people tried 3DS more than those who had tried DS. Don't need to play game, just watch the 3D image first. And we would be glad if some of them understand the joy of gaming. Console sales is just a result." ("Nikkei Business" February 21, 2011 Issue)

As stated before, unlike NDS, 3DS can't play illegal software right now, if this situation continues, console sales may not be as much as DS. But it is very possible to let more people to try 3DS in a legal way. So when you ask the definition of success for 3DS, I would say, to make more people try 3DS. This is it. Nothing to do with the quality of 3D function or console sales. Make people try the stuff, this really matters. Of course it would be better if many people buy their own consoles and expand the gaming market.
The price is high and maybe difficult to be popular as much as DS, but we need to study 3DS in other aspects huh.
