Disaster's Influence to Gaming Industry
| Disaster's Influence to Gaming Industry | |

News of the disaster are still coming in, and I would like to think about the disaster's influence to gaming industry. |
![]() |
We have already got some problem, such as that mentioned at "Zettai Zetsumei Toshi (Disaster Report) 4. Any Problem with Earthquake Game?". |
![]() |
There are 5 issues: 1. Sales, 2. Content of Game and Release, 3. Electric Power Failure, 4. Development, 5. Production. |
![]() |
Let's start with sales. |
![]() |
Touhoku people facing the disaster need to focus on resuming the live and money won't be used in gaming, shops stop running, shipment cut off. |
![]() |
Even though there could be customer, the shop just can't supply software huh. |
![]() |
Someone may argue that people need to buy new console to replace broken one, but most people would save money for reconstruction. Need a long time for them to come back to gaming. |
![]() |
As for content and release, Zettai Zetsumei Toshi (Disaster Report) 4 had announced a termination of release. |
![]() |
And for other games which have description of earthquake or disaster, they need to change the content. Especially for big companies, they must pay attention to avoid people blaming them about the content. And such change may cause postpone in launching date. |
![]() |
There is no official announcement, but "Ryu ga Gotoku Of the End" has a postpone. |
![]() |
The game is about zombie, but the city is devastated so they just can't launch it now. It is a few days to launch, quick response really. Much better than FINAL FANTASY XIV, which had launched on time without a satisfying quality. |
![]() |
...... |
![]() |
How about power failure? Not only Touhoku, Tokyo is having blackout sometimes now. |
![]() |
Gaming need electricity, and this situation means at some time period you can't play home or even portable console. That's the problem of users. As for online games, there is another problem. |
![]() |
Namely? |
![]() |
Online game need to access the the server. The service would be terminated by blackout, and some companies would just close the server for now. |
![]() |
SQUARE ENIX has announced the service of FINAL FANTASY XI and XIV will be stopped for a while. |
![]() |
I hope FINAL FANTASY XIV would stop forever. |
![]() |
Don't say that... |
![]() |
KOEI TECMO also stop many games and official site. We need to remember this situation after earthquake, similar situation won't be as serious as this time though. |
![]() |
I am facing huge difficulty for that!! |
![]() |
Please don't say that... |
![]() |
Not only MMO, VS mode would be terminated if opponent's facing a blackout. Not big problem though. |
![]() |
The forth problem is game development. |
![]() |
For blackout in Tokyo, development may be terminated in sometime. Companies may introduce private generator, but small companies may lost data during blackout. |
![]() |
Need to save data usually. |
![]() |
And developer have problem too. |
![]() |
Problem? |
![]() |
If some developers had been in Touhoku, they may be facing disaster now. |
![]() |
False rumor saying the death of Pokemon's creator had spread for a while. |
![]() |
Game development is mainly held in Capital and Kansai region, Fukuoka, Aichi also. So the influence is not major. There maybe problem of content and release need them to deal with though. |
![]() |
As for production? |
![]() |
For console production, mainly held in China and Taiwan so no big deal. Don't know if there is any parts made in Touhoku though. No idea for Sony, but software mainly produced by Asia factory so should be fine. |
![]() |
That's all. |
![]() |
There maybe individual problem though. The influence of the disaster is wide, we should think about how we can improve the system of the whole country. |
